ACS Scholars
American Chemical Society
The ACS Scholars Program is offering renewable scholarships of $1,000 to $5,000 per year for Black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx, and Native American undergraduate students majoring in chemistry-related fields and pursuing chemistry-related careers (visit the How to Apply page for a full list of eligible majors). In addition to scholarship support, ACS Scholars also helps students identify academic and/or professional mentors, offers internship opportunities, and conference travel awards. Note that there is no limit on the number of awarded students from a single institution, so encourage all eligible students to apply and spread the word. Scholarship applications must be submitted online via the ACS Scholars Program website through March 1, 2021, for the 2021-2022 academic year. Additional information is available by emailing scholars@acs.org.

Learn when — and how — to say no in your professional life
Science
Early in Leah’s career, she said yes to absolutely everything. Review this paper? Yes, sounds interesting! Give this presentation? Ooh, yes please! Serve on this time-intensive committee? Happy to help! Take part in an uninteresting activity in another country at a highly inconvenient date and time? Sure, why not? Whether caused by a combination of excitement about being a part of the field or an aversion to letting people down, she simply did not know how to say a simple word: “No.”

3 tips on how to stand out in a January job search
Forbes
January is usually one of the best months to launch a job search because many companies begin a fresh and more aggressive wave of hiring in January to match the business plans they set for the new year.
In addition, unlike a fall job search that is sandwiched between job market slowdowns over the summer and holiday season, starting your job search in January gives you several months to make progress in networking and interviewing without losing momentum.

As a grad student struggling with mental health, I learned to ask for help
Science
Angela Q. Zhang writes:
“Are you OK?” my principal investigator (PI) asked me. I had just broken down crying in his office during one of our meetings. “It doesn’t seem like you’re OK.” He was right. But I wasn’t ready to be vulnerable with him, so I evaded the question. Later, I wondered why. When I mentor undergrads, I make a point of connecting with them on a personal level and reaching out to them when they seem to need help. For the past year, I had been yearning for someone to do the same for me.
