ACS Scholars
American Chemical Society
The ACS Scholars Program is offering renewable scholarships of $1,000 to $5,000 per year for Black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx, and Native American undergraduate students majoring in chemistry-related fields and pursuing chemistry-related careers (visit the How to Apply page for a full list of eligible majors). In addition to scholarship support, ACS Scholars also helps students identify academic and/or professional mentors, offers internship opportunities, and conference travel awards. Note that there is no limit on the number of awarded students from a single institution, so encourage all eligible students to apply and spread the word. Scholarship applications must be submitted online via the ACS Scholars Program website through March 1, 2021, for the 2021-2022 academic year. Jane Willenbring’s opening salvo in the documentary “Picture a Scientist” is one that still brings tears to her eyes. The geomorphologist recalls taking her daughter to work one day and the 3-year-old saying she wanted to be a scientist just like her mom.
“That was the horrible, sort of lose-it, triggering moment that I ever had. I actually started crying at the time,” said the director of Stanford University’s Cosmogenic Isotope Laboratory.

LGBTQ professionals in STEM are 30% more likely to experience workplace harassment compared with their non-LGBTQ peers. They’re also more likely to experience other career-related challenges, including social exclusion and professional devaluation and to consider leaving their STEM profession entirely. That’s according to a new study that surveyed more than 25,000 U.S.-based STEM workers, roughly 1000 of whom identified as LGBTQ.
