DuPont will be hosting a virtual one-day seminar series and oral presentation competition at the 48th National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) Annual Conference. This collaborative initiative supports DuPont’s commitment to a diverse work force and is the third installment of DuPont’s GOLD (Growth Opportunities Leading in Diversity) program, a platform intended to expose doctoral and post-doctoral scientists from underrepresented groups (African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native American) to the wide range of career opportunities in industrial research at DuPont. The theme of this year’s GOLD seminar competition at NOBBCChE is “Makers of New: Developing Innovation for Tomorrow." Selected participants will give an oral presentation on their research, competing to win $1000, participate in networking and mentoring sessions with DuPont scientists, and receive an interview with a DuPont recruiter. Visit http://www.nobcche.org/DupontGold2021 for more information.

Chemistry textbooks still lack gender and racial representation
Chemical & Engineering News
Many chemistry departments have attempted to improve the representation of marginalized scientists in their schools and courses — for example, tackling “dude walls,” which honor historical or departmental science figures who are predominantly White men, and weed-out foundation courses, which are those with large enrollment and high fail rates that often disproportionately fail students who aren’t White males.

Max and Gareth stand side by side at the gas station near Berlin’s Checkpoint Charlie. Gareth holds the fuel nozzle in the tank while closely observing the pump.
“Isn’t it fascinating to watch the numbers increase?” Max jokes.
The friends and former Ph.D. colleagues haven’t seen each other for a while. Max lives in the Netherlands these days, where he works as an industry food scientist, having decided to leave academia after his first postdoc.

Study challenges idea that students with cognitive disabilities can't be in STEM
Phys.org
A new Portland State study challenges the idea that youth with cognitive disabilities are unable or lack potential to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. In a study using national data on more than 15,000 adolescents, the researchers found that undergraduates with medicated ADHD or autism appear to be more likely to major in STEM than youth without cognitive disabilities, and youth with autism have the most positive STEM attitudes.
