Supreme Court sides with book reseller in copyright ruling

The Supreme Court gave foreign buyers of books, video discs and other copyrighted works a right to resell them in the U.S. without permission of the copyright owner, giving discount retailers a victory and the entertainment industry a setback. The 6-3 decision came in the case of Supap Kirtsaeng, a University of Southern California graduate student from Thailand who figured he could earn money for his education by buying low-cost textbooks in his native country and reselling them in the United States.

National Pawnbrokers Association celebrates Musical Instrument Gift Day with help from The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation and Rowan Middle School in Jackson, Miss.

On Dec. 6, 2012, the National Pawnbrokers Association (NPA) sponsored its fourth annual Musical Instrument Gift Day, where pawnbrokers from around the country made generous donations of musical instruments to organizations in need. On March 26 at 9:30 a.m., NPA and The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation will be hosting a donation event at Rowan Middle School in Jackson, Miss, by presenting the donated musical instruments to the band program and students.

"Pawn Stars" producer Leftfield Pictures has acquired Sirens Media. To complement the acquisition, production company has established Leftfield Entertainment, an umbrella parent company to house Sirens and Leftfield Pictures. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the Leftfield-Sirens deal was financed by a syndicate of banks led by Barclays.

JPMorgan's new policy on payday lenders

JPMorgan Chase is moving to protect customers whose accounts are tapped by Internet-based payday lenders, planning to give those customers more power to stop withdrawals and close their accounts, Jessica Silver-Greenberg reports in DealBook.
