Silver: Higher minimum wage not a job-killer

New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver does not believe raising the state's minimum wage will hurt New York's chances of attracting new businesses and jobs. His proposed bill bumps the minimum wage to $8.50 per hour, a 17 percent increase over current rates, and calls for the minimum wage to be adjusted every year for inflation. More

State unemployment rate holds steady in December

Unemployment in the state remained steady at 8 percent in December — the same figure reported at the close of 2010, according to statistics from the Labor Department. Upstate New York showed the strongest performance, with an overall unemployment rate of 7.8 percent, compared to 8.1 percent at the same time in 2010. More

Xerox Corp. will build a $4.3 million customer care center in Monroe County that will create 500 new jobs during the next two years. As part of the project, Xerox plans to renovate an existing building at its Webster campus to provide customer care support on behalf of a Xerox client in the telecommunications industry. Meanwhile, debt collection company Continental Service Group Inc. has been awarded a contract from the U.S. Department of the Treasury and will add 50 jobs during the next three years. More
