Jobs numbers offer pleasant surprise

Recent job numbers have offered a welcome surprise: 243,000 people were added to payrolls in the past month, which is far more than the 140,000 analysts were predicting. Encouragingly, the gains were broad and came in many sectors: manufacturing, construction, temporary help agencies, accounting firms, restaurants and retailers. It was the biggest job growth since April, and it brought the unemployment rate down to 8.3 percent. More

Index: Employee confidence jumps

The Randstad employee confidence index rose 5.0 points in January to a reading of 52.4, the biggest climb since it began. The index measures workers' confidence in their personal employment situation and optimism about the economic environment. More

According to a joint study by Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute, manufacturing companies have roughly 600,000 vacancies they are struggling to fill. It illustrates a growing skills mismatch, with too few of the 13.1 million unemployed Americans equipped for the available jobs. A new candidate pool is emerging, however: returning veterans who have technical skills training and a can-do attitude.
