GE Aviation said it successfully tested its first Advanced Turboprop engine, which will power the new Cessna Denali single-engine turboprop airplane.
The announcement means GE Aviation is on track with its engine development plans, which Textron Aviation is counting on to keep to its own schedule for development of the Denali, which will be manufactured by some of the company’s 9,000 Wichita employees.
This section only (Volume 6, Chapter 2, Section 40) for public comment is part of a 3-section change, 8900.1 CHG MRO2, that will go into formal coordination simultaneously. This change incorporates information that will require ASIs assigned to responsible Flight Standards offices to conduct coordinated planning meetings and perform coordinated surveillance of contract maintenance providers.
Ground collisions have thankfully been few and far between over the past few years. However, the FAA is taking no chances and continues to raise awareness of the risk of runway incursions between aircraft and vehicles operating on airports of all sizes. The agency said the majority of incursions occur in the first two-thirds of the runway. FAA data reveals some good news, that pilot deviations translating into incursions have dropped by nearly 50 percent over the past year.
Governments across the globe and segments of the automotive industry alike are tolling the bell for internal combustion engines. Norway, France, the United Kingdom, India, and the Netherlands all plan to ban the sale of internal combustion vehicles as soon as 2025. China and Germany seek to enact a similar ban, though neither has a time frame in mind, and the state of California is evaluating the idea.
From composites to onboard connectivity, aircraft technology has advanced significantly in the past several decades. The required training standards used to develop mechanics in the U.S., however, have not kept pace.
But that is about to change.
The FAA is in the late stages of a major revamp of its Part 147 regulations, which set standards for the 170 aviation maintenance technician schools that supply approximately 60 percent of the industry's certified airframe and powerplant mechanics.
GE Aviation announced it had successfully test run its partially 3-D printed Advanced Turboprop engine, which is set to power the Textron Denali single turboprop. Details of the test were scant in the GE press release but "early indications show that we will meet or exceed all the performance numbers we have quoted for the engine," said GE spokesman Brad Mottier.
Despite longer-lasting aircraft, more durable engines and innovations in maintenance techniques, recent research has shown maintenance spending continues to increase. In fact, airlines now spend more money on maintenance than on fuel or crew. The need to cut maintenance, repair and overhaul costs is a pressing issue for airlines. So is the need to keep assets operationally available.
While aircraft manufacturers continue to look for the light at the end of the tunnel, the fractional ownership segment has settled into essentially a two horse race, NetJets and Flexjet, and the stream of Uber claiming wannabes that were going to change the on-demand charter market slowing to a trickle, Jet Cards have seemingly become the hottest area of the private aviation market. Below are 10 of biggest trends we reported on this past year.
