FAA turns its aviation oversight to unmanned drones in US airspace

The FAA is moving ahead with plans to facilitate a vast expansion of the domestic use of drones amidst acute concerns about privacy and aviation security. The FAA has called on universities, state and local governments, and other public entities to submit proposals to create six research and test sites for unmanned aircraft systems around the country. Altus, Okla., is known for its agricultural community and an Air Force base. Together they are not only growing crops, they are growing mechanics through the Grow Your Own Mechanic program. The GYOM program is an aircraft maintenance technician internship program. It was developed in 1999 under the Student Education Employment Plan in cooperation with the Southwest Technology Center's Aviation and Aerospace program providing skilled, aerospace jobs to the local area. Baton Rouge Community College in Louisiana plans to create airplane mechanic program

Baton Rouge Community College hopes to have a program to train airplane mechanics up and running by the fall, more than two years after originally planned. The program would produce federally-certified mechanics but is still being reviewed by the Federal Aviation Administration, said Mark Peeples, the program's director. More

Spirit Airlines ex-employee files suit on falsified maintenance records
