MROs still innovating despite pandemic restraints

The virus crisis has been very tough on digital innovators throughout commercial aviation. Indeed, airlines slashed IT spending from nearly $50 billion in 2019 to a little over $20 billion in 2020, according to SITA's 2020 Air Transport IT Insights. The cuts in airport IT spending were also drastic, from almost $9 billion in 2019 to about $3.5 billion last year. It's safe to assume that cuts in commercial MRO IT spending were also very sharp.

COVID relief bill clears House with Mfg, MRO support

Recently, the U.S. House of Representatives approved new relief for aerospace manufacturers along with additional funding for airports, air carriers, and certain contractors as part of the sweeping $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Act. The overall package narrowly cleared the full House by a 219-212 vote and is now headed to the Senate for consideration.

New bills to step up federal coordination of AAM

Legislation seeking to boost the development of advanced air mobility (AAM) in the U.S. is now progressing in both the House and Senate with bipartisan support. The proposed bills, "Advanced Air Mobility Coordination and Leadership Act," call on Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to establish an inter-agency working group to coordinate efforts to develop a complete AAM ecosystem to support widespread operations of new eVTOL aircraft.

ATP doubles capacity at KCRG

To meet the needs of an industry primed for exponential growth, ATP Flight School has increased airline pilot training operations in Jacksonville, Florida, with a newly opened 3,000-square-foot expansion at Jacksonville Executive Airport at Craig (KCRG).
The Jacksonville Executive training center is one of the busiest in ATP's nationwide network of more than 50 locations, with students at Jacksonville flying over 10,000 hours in 2020, according to company officials.

Atlas Air Worldwide Signs agreement for GEnx engines
GE Aviation
Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq: AAWW) signed an agreement with GE Aviation to purchase GEnx-2B engines for its four Boeing 747-8 Freighters along with a 20-year TrueChoice Overhaul agreement, which covers the time and material required to overhaul the GEnx-2B engines. The agreements are valued at more than $800 million (USD) list price over the life of the service agreement.

Pandemic hit FBOs hard, analysts predict 'very slow recovery'

Nearly 70 percent of FBOs in the U.S. and Canada suffered a decrease in fuel sales during 2020, according to the Aviation Business Strategies Group's (ABSG) Annual FBO Fuel Sales Survey.
The survey also found that only 20 percent of FBOs reported an increase in fuel sales during the year of the pandemic, according to ABSGs Principals John Enticknap and Ron Jackson.
