Engine manufacturers and airframers have long worried that the FAA would like the authority to declare the replacement fuel for 100LL as applicable for fleetwide use. But at Aero in Friedrichshafen, Germany, Lycoming's Michael Kraft told AVweb that the FAA reauthorization bill currently snaking through Congress has specific language giving the FAA administrator power to declare a fuel suitable for the entire GA fleet.
Describing it as an "urgent safety issue," the Federal Aviation Administration has ordered modifications on specific General Electric engines on some 787 Dreamliners because an icing problem could force those engines to shut down in flight.
Friday's FAA airworthiness directive stems from a Jan. 29 incident aboard a 787 flying at about 20,000 feet.

In a world where faster, higher, and further are the goal of getting from point A to point B, a contrarian airplane and its two man crew made an historic landing in San Francisco over the weekend.
The sun-powered Solar Impulse-2 touched down safely after flying non stop for nearly three days and nights while crossing the Pacific Ocean from Hawaii to the U.S. mainland.
A speed record it wasn't. Traveling 2,396 miles in 62 hours, the aircraft averaged a hair faster than 38 mph. Some boats and whales can cover that distance faster.
Engine leasing has changed dramatically in the past five years as rent extensions for older equipment have given way to short-term deals that burn off the remaining service life of a turbofan before teardown. Powered by a custom-mixed 50-50-blend of aviation biofuel and Jet A, schoolteacher Ross McCurdy, his 12-year-old son Aedan and a rotating crew of second pilots are spending school break flying across the U.S. east to west in a diesel-powered Cessna 182, to promote the potential of eco-friendly fuels. "We achieved a milestone for the flight today, flying over and along the mighty Mississippi river," McCurdy wrote in a recent blog post.
