All his life, Brett Sundgaard would give a look up to everything that flew by overhead.
His father, a registered nurse, took him out on summer nights to watch the jets of the 148th Fighter Wing.
"I have a passion for it," he said, clad in the absorbent blue-grays of a mechanic.
Grounded and making pharmaceutical deliveries for a living, the 45-year-old saw a digital billboard that changed his life. It offered the chance to become an aviation maintenance technician.
Specialized flight training has long been part of the typical transition process for pilots moving up to ever-faster and more capable airplanes. A rash of fatal SR22 crashes in 2012, however, forced Cirrus Aircraft to go back to the drawing board and completely rethink its approach to training. Nothing was out of bounds, from the extra emphasis Cirrus decided to place on flying technique to the greater attention to operations that demand special attention, such as engine management, to the way pilots are taught to react to emergencies.

The number of worldwide deliveries of general aviation products fell 3.7 percent to 422 in the first quarter, compared to the same period in 2015.
All industry segments declined, with turboprops down 6.8 percent, business jets down 4.7 percent and piston aircraft down 1 percent, according to new data from the General Aviation Manufacturers Association.
The total value of deliveries was down 9.5 percent to $4 billion year over year.
Nebraska's Fremont Municipal Airport traces its beginnings to aviation enthusiast John T. Siems.
Born in Platte Center, Siems went to a flying school in Norfolk, soon qualifying to fly, instruct or do aerobatics, airport information states.
He arrived in Columbus in 1928 and rented 80 acres of hay meadow for an airport site. He taught about 100 pilots to fly during his 11 years there.
At first glance, the bottle opener Dan McFarlane displays to illustrate the new manufacturing process McFarlane Aviation plans for its Vinland, Kansas, plant doesn't look much different from other metal bottle openers.
It has the same bend near the business end as most openers that fit on key chains, and has a mouth that fits snuggly on the bottle cap. What sets it apart are the numerous perforated raindrop-shaped holes in what McFarlane reveals is a titanium body.

Eastman Chemical Company has won approval from engine manufacturer CFM International for its Eastman Turbo Oil 2197 and 2380 to be used in the CFM LEAP-1A engine, one of the two options for the A320neo.
The approval follows the OEM conducting a number of tests which confirmed positive lubrication system performance, oil sample results and lube system diagnostics.
Hydrogen fuel cells have long been discussed as a potential power source for vehicles, including aircraft, and researchers at the German aerospace center, the DLR, believe that technical barriers can be overcome in the near term to make hydrogen a practical fuel source. Speaking at the first annual Sustainable Aviation Foundation symposium in Redwood City, California, the DLR's Josef Kallo told attendees that research on practical hydrogen cells is much further along than many people realize.
