A Federal Aviation Administration and industry working group is creating an airman certification standard (ACS) that will replace current mechanic testing guidance. The purpose of the ACS is to ensure applicants, educators and evaluators understand knowledge and performance expectations throughout the what applicants are expected to know, consider, and do during the certification process.
It was a policy that never made a lick of sense in the first place, and now it's going away. The FAA recently issued a final policy on "non-aeronautical use of hangars" that purges terms like "incidental use" and "insignificant amount of space" from the document. As a result, the FAA will consider the construction of amateur-built or kit-built aircraft as an "aeronautical activity" permitted under the guidelines.

The flight instructor reported that he and the pilot receiving instruction had completed a local instructional flight and were returning to the airport in Burlington, Massachusetts.
While the Cirrus SR22 was about 1,700 foot mean sea level, the engine began running roughly and subsequently lost all power.
The pilot receiving instruction immediately handed over the flight controls to the flight instructor.

GE Aviation has appointed an Army veteran to lead its plant at Strother Field in Arkansas City, Kansas.
Tim McQueen replaces Jorge Perez, who was promoted to supply chain growth playbook leader at GE Aviation.
McQueen has been with GE Aviation since 2004, starting as an assembly and test technician on the GE90 jet engine, which is used on the Boeing 777.
Bombardier has unveiled its new support centre for the CSeries aircraft in Mirabel, Quebec, where it will offer operators access to technical services, engineering expertise and material services. The OEM said its new customer response centre has already commenced with support for CSeries operators, with the service available all year round and 24 hours a day.
Representatives of the Progressive Air Group and Brant Aero announced today that Progressive Air Group has finalized its acquisition of Brantford, Ontario-based Brant Aero.
Based at Brant Aero’s current location at Brantford Airport (CYFD) in Ontario, Canada, the new company will continue to operate as Brant Aero. In addition, the company has established a new parts distribution center based at the facility. That group will operate as Progressive Air East.
The farming season is well underway in Region 8 and it is keeping aviation mechanics busy. Late Aviation Repair opened up at the Pocahontas Municipal Airport less than a year ago.
Solar Impulse 2 is expected to launch from New York to Seville, Spain, on the longest leg of its circumnavigation using solar power only. The flight was to start recently but weather concerns delayed it by a day. The flight will take an estimated 90 hours and will be flown by Bertrand Piccard. The aircraft flew the Pacific in two legs with a prolonged stop in Hawaii to repair batteries damaged in the flight from Japan. Piccard splits the flying with Andre Borschberg.
