A growing need for aviation maintenance technicians, and increasing technologies in the aviation industry overall, have demanded forward-thinking solutions from aviation maintenance training institutions like National Aviation Academy (NAA) in recent years. In an effort to bolster offerings to students, and the industry alike, NAA has developed a diverse and highly-adept leadership team, making changes that will steer their educational facilities in Clearwater, Florida, and Concord, Massachusetts, into the future.

On the eve of the two-year anniversary of the FAA establishing regulations for operating small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), also known as drones, the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International released an update to its analysis of waivers by the FAA for UAS operations beyond the scope of the Small UAS rule and found that nearly 2,000 have been granted.
Obtaining sufficient mechanics has become important enough that at least one major U.S. MRO has elevated the challenge from Human Resources to the C Suite. Aviation Technical Services has chosen Dana Eden, from the health sector, to address the challenge as chief people officer.
This occurs as ATS is seeking more than 200 mechanics immediately, and Eden expects growth will require even more in the future.

Boston-based flying car company Terrafugia has inked a deal for 6,700 square feet of hangar and office space at Boire Field Airport (KASH) in Nashua, New Hampshire.
The lease agreement comes as the company revealed its plans to start production of its first flying car, the Transition, in 2019.
Another mishap involving jet-A contaminated by diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) occurred on August 14 when a Fair Wind Air Charter-operated Dassault Falcon 900EX was forced to make an emergency return to Miami Opa-Locka Airport after suffering failure of two of its three engines. DEF, a urea-based solution that lowers nitrogen oxide pollutants in diesel exhaust, is not approved for use in jet fuel.
With the ADS-B Out deadline looming, a number of MROs have recently received supplemental type certificates (STC) from regulatory authorities to help operators comply with the mandate.
AerSale's ADSB-Out system, AerTrak, has just been issued an STC by the FAA for installation on Boeing 757-200 series aircraft.
Honeywell Aerospace unveiled two new groups, Honeywell Engineering Services (HES) and Honeywell Technical Services (HTS), to offer expertise to global commercial and military aerospace manufacturers and suppliers. The groups will tap into their certification and technical experience to help manufacturers and suppliers improve their product development processes and control costs.
