FAA launches podcast

The FAA has launched a new podcast, "The Air Up There," a show for "anyone who is interested in learning more about aviation — whether you're an aviation geek (av geek, for short) like us or just getting started," FAA officials say. The podcast will cover all things aviation, from airlines to general aviation to drones. "We've come a long way since the first human flight more than 100 years ago, and things are changing exponentially," FAA officials said in a blog announcing the new podcast.

FAA announces grants to build ranks of AMTs

As a means to fill the pipeline of future aircraft maintenance technicians (AMT), the FAA has announced the Aviation Maintenance Technical Workforce Development Grant Program. In Fiscal Year 2020, Congress appropriated $5 million to fund projects intended to stem the shortage of AMTs.

    A new R&D laboratory built by Honeywell at its Deer Valley site in Phoenix Arizona has been equipped to test the latest and future avionics systems for unmanned aircraft. The laboratory, which has been set up to resemble a conceptual UAM (urban air mobility) vehicle flight deck with real hardware, is the first of its kind to demonstrate actual fly-by-wire controls and vehicle avionics integrated in a lab setting according to the aerospace engineering company.

    SD marks 2,000th FlightDeck Freedom install

    Satcom Direct has achieved activation on the 2,000th aircraft of its FlightDeck Freedom datalink service since its launch in 2007. The service consolidates flight deck communications, including integrating with third-party trip planning services and helping manage flight operations. The latest activation involved a head-of-state aircraft. Operators can use FlightDeck Freedom for real-time worldwide flight tracking and to receive automated flight notifications such as hazardous weather, route, and security alerts, according to Satcom Direct.
