Lockheed subsidiary Kelly Aviation opens Montreal maintenance plant

Hundreds of former Aveos employees have been given hope of recovering high-paying jobs as the engine overhaul subsidiary of Lockheed Martin officially opened its operations in Montreal recently with plans for aggressive growth. The initial workforce of 90 is expected to expand to about 100 by year-end and more than double by the end of 2014.

Denver Mayor Hancock seeking to phase out tax on aircraft parts

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock's proposed 2014 budget calls for phasing out an aircraft-parts tax that airlines have said prevents them from bringing maintenance jobs to the city. Airlines, including Frontier, have said that the city's 3.62 percent sales-and-use tax on aviation parts keeps them from doing heavy-maintenance work here and that they don't want to locate major maintenance facilities in Denver because of the tax.

Etihad to establish Belgrade hub through Air Serbia

Belgrade Airport in Serbia is set to see its operations change as the country's reimagined national carrier looks to establish its new network and fleet hub under the guidance of Etihad Airways. The Serbian government and Etihad recently announced that Jat Airways would be rebranded as Air Serbia, with a period of transition taking place to introduce a new corporate identity, aircraft fleet and network of destinations.

Change in tax policy helps Maine's aviation industry take off

Six aircraft, some stripped down to not much more than their shells, are crowded into Maine Aviation's hangar on the outskirts of the Portland International Jetport. Allyn Caruso, president and CEO of Maine Aviation, walks among the planes, pointing to one after another and explaining what type of work his mechanics are completing. Most of these planes, he says, wouldn't be here if it weren't for a change in tax policy the Maine Legislature adopted in 2011 that exempts aircraft parts from Maine's 5 percent sales tax.

Georgia Northwestern Technical College received a donation of two Cessna 400 Series aircraft from Northrop Grumman Corporation to be used for hands-on training at the Aviation Training Center. The donation of the Cessna aircraft will further GNTC's ability to prepare students for an exciting career in the field of aviation maintenance technology or avionics maintenance technology.
