Engineered Propulsion Systems of Wisconsin has reached the final stage of design for its Graflight 8 diesel engine, freezing the design in preparation for certification. "That does not mean that we will not introduce new elements or refinements in the engine as technologies evolve in the future," said EPS CEO Michael Fuchs. "Indeed, we have already incorporated a significant number of innovations in the Graflight 8, but now it's time to address the conformity process, and for that we lock the design, knowing we have reached the current limits of refinement."
Maintenance professionals tell us that regulatory burden is the biggest, most consistent threat to repair station profitability. Poorly crafted rules, inconsistent enforcement and government policies that don't align with business realities make compliance certainty problematic.
The FAA has begun accepting applications for $500 rebates for installation of ADS-B OUT equipment on single-engine piston airplanes. The FAA plans to issue 20,000 rebates, and they are available on a first-come, first-serve basis for one year or until all are claimed for owners of U.S.-registered aircraft, the agency stated.
Aviation maintenance technicians maintain, service, repair and overhaul airframes, powerplants, avionics and aircraft instruments. Boeing projects 600,000 AMTs will be needed by the airline industry alone over the next two decades.
Lufthansa Technik and MTU Aero Engines are exploring the possibility of forming a maintenance company to offer services for the PW1000G geared turbofan engine after a signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU). Both parties said a decision will be made by the end of 2016 with a "globally competitive" location to be determined.
Aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul, and support provider AAR said Sept. 14 it has acquired Sonic Aviation, an aircraft paint stripping and washing business at Miami International Airport. "The acquisition of Sonic moves AAR into an adjacent vertical and will further extend our ability to provide value-added services to airlines," said Brian Loomer, general manager of AAR Aircraft Services–Miami.
Ratings Man is a ratings collector. No matter how many ratings or hours anyone has, he has more. Many of us go after the more common upgrades to our private pilot certificates, such as an instrument rating or high-performance and complex aircraft endorsements. Out in the wild blue yonder, we put these skills to good use. But some argue it's expensive to collect signatures in our logbooks for stuff we'll rarely — or never — use.
The Connecticut Mirror
The State Department of Education has reversed its previous decision to stop enrolling new students in the only two schools in Connecticut that train airplane mechanics. "We recognize the value in our aviation schools providing skilled workers ready to take jobs in Connecticut"s thriving aviation industry. We are in the process of exploring potential partnership options for the future," said Abbe Smith, a spokesman for the education department.
When you're depending on a machine to keep you in the air, there's no substitute for safety. Still, a little spiritual uplift never hurts.
That seemed to be the prevailing opinion at the second-annual Blessing of the Aircraft and Pilots at Urbana, Ohio's Grimes Field in Champaign County, about 50 miles northwest of Columbus.
"I can use all the help I can get," said pilot and flight instructor Tom Printz of Springfield shortly after Joseph Binzer, auxiliary Roman Catholic bishop of Cincinnati, sprinkled holy water on his small plane.
