Congress voted to extend FAA funding, which was set to expire soon, for six months. The extension allows more time for debate on whether air traffic control should be privatized, and whether changes should be made in the requirements for commercial pilots. GA advocates were quick to weigh in.
The FAA has banned drones from flying within 400 feet of several U.S. landmarks and five of the largest dams in the U.S. a day after FBI Director Christopher Wray said he was worried about terrorists using drones against the U.S. The 10 specific locations are all landmarks under the jurisdiction of the Department of the Interior and include the Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore. The restrictions take effect on Oct. 5 and mark the first time the FAA has imposed this sort of restriction on civilian sites. Military bases continue to be off-limits for drones.

According to author Jamie Beckett: Years ago I read a passage written by Richard Bach that has stuck with me. While I can't quote it, and frankly I can't even remember which book it comes from, Richard left the impression that flight instruction was a noble calling.
He wrote about the satisfaction that comes from passing on to a new generation of aerial travelers the lessons we learned as we became pilots ourselves.
European maintenance provider Ruag Aviation recently completed simultaneous 15-month and 30-month inspections on a Gulfstream G550 at its Munich, Germany, facility. The contract from Sky-Tech Maintenance Service also included full painting of the aircraft with new livery and line maintenance on the twinjet’s Rolls-Royce BR710 turbofans during the five-week downtime.
Minnesota-based BRS Aerospace announced this week the establishment of a nationwide network of qualified centers that will handle the installation of whole aircraft parachutes on Cessna 172 and 182 aircraft.
"The network of factory-approved installation centers are all equipped and qualified to install the BRS Aerospace whole aircraft parachute recovery systems in 172s and 182s providing an unprecedented level of safety for legacy aircraft and newer models," BRS Aerospace President Enrique Dillon said in a statement.
The U.S. Department of Commerce has proposed a 219.63 percent duty on the sale of 100- to 150-seat jets from Canada into the U.S., potentially striking a major blow to Bombardier’s C Series program. The ruling comes ahead of planned delivery next spring of the first of 75 Bombardier CS100s to Delta Air Lines, the U.S. launch customer for the program.
Making a good aviation product better is a concept as old as capitalistic ingenuity itself. OEMs release improved versions of their best airplanes and power plants, each perhaps a bit faster or more versatile than its predecessor. Not everyone can afford the latest edition of a machine, of course, nor does everyone want one. Some operators get as comfy with an airplane they've spent years breaking in as they might be with a favorite jacket or pair of running shoes.
A week after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, most of the island remains without power, yet FBOs there are in operation for relief and private flights. At Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport, Jet Aviation San Juan came through the storm virtually unscathed and has returned to full operations.
