Flight Safety Detectives Episode 138: Level 5 thunderstorm leads to plane crash

Flight Safety Detectives examine the crash of a Sabreliner twin engine plane in Ironwood, Michigan. The pilots flew into severe weather and did not follow standard procedures to avoid engine flameout.
The pilots were on a day trip transporting two business executives. They flew into a level 5 thunderstorm and lost both engines. The investigation showed they did not use the established checklist for this type of situation.

Rash of mid-air collisions leads FAA to update see and avoid AC

The number of mid-air collisions in recent months has led the FAA to update its Advisory Circular regarding the pilot's role in collision avoidance.
The new AC, released Oct. 22, 2022, replaces one from June 2016, with updates regarding additional information regarding pilot actions, procedures, Notices to Air Missions (NOTAM), and aircraft technology to mitigate the risk of a pilot causing or being involved in a ground collision, in-flight collision, or near mid-air collision (NMAC).

Deutsche Aircraft renews Mx contract with private wings

Business aviation operator Private Wings Flugcharter has signed a follow-on maintenance contract with Munich-based Deutsche Aircraft to support the company’s fleet of nine Fairchild Dornier 328-100 turboprops and one 328Jet. Founded in 1991, Private Wings operates from the general aviation terminal of Manching Airport near Ingolstadt, Germany.

Pilots needed for experimental PIREP testing

The FAA is looking for pilots to participate in a study to explore the concept of filing and retrieving Pilot Reports (PIREPs) over VHF radio on a dedicated frequency (122.0MHz), without having to talk to an ATC controller or Flight Service specialist.
An experimental proof of concept system is being deployed within 50 nm from two airports — Will Rogers World Airport (KOKC) in Oklahoma and Nenana Municipal Airport (PANN) in Alaska.

Keystone approved for RR300 engine performance testing

Keystone Turbine Services (KTS), a unit of Atlanta-based Precision Aviation Group (PAG), has successfully correlated and certified both of its all-digital engine test cells to support the Rolls-Royce RR300 series of gas turbine engines. The development builds on Pennsylvania-based KTS's OEM-approved aftermarket MRO services on the Rolls-Royce M250 and RR300 engines, as well as module, accessory, component, spare parts, and field service support in addition to Honeywell and Triumph-related accessories.

Ricci: Capital influx into bizav has changed industry

The influx of investment capital into the business aviation market has caused major changes to the industry, Directional Aviation principal Kenn Ricci said yesterday at Corporate Jet Investor Miami. According to Ricci, the amount of private aircraft available for nonscheduled commercial operations has increased by approximately 25 percent since 2016, but the amount of operators has begun to decline.
