Demand sky high for aviation maintenance grads

From Aug. 10: Immediately after graduating from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in May 2022 with a degree in Aviation Maintenance Science, Mathias Berdugo started a job as an avionics and A&P technician for Bombardier — just one of several job offers he received.
His new job included "very generous" assistance for his relocation, as well as a great employment package "with many good benefits," he added.

FAA proposed rule mandating SMS for manufacturers nears publication

From June 29: U.S. Federal Aviation Administration officials plan to shortly initiate proposed rulemaking that would require aircraft and engine manufacturers to have a Safety Management System (SMS) in place, obligating them to manage safety with the same level of priority that other core business processes are managed.

GA's unleaded fuel problem is solved

From May 11: All that's needed is one signature from FAA headquarters in Washington, D.C.
A small company in a tiny little town in Oklahoma has solved general aviation's biggest problem.
After a 12-year quest, General Aviation Modifications Inc. (GAMI) has created an unleaded fuel that is a drop-in, fleet-wide solution that can be used in every spark ignition piston engine in the FAA database.

From Jan. 19: In the mid-1950s, I went along with my father to my uncle's service station to buy some oil. While we were there, the man who owned a service station in the neighboring town came in to buy some oil.
My uncle, who knew the man well, asked him if he came in to buy the good stuff as opposed to the brand that he sold. After a few laughs, the man explained that he had just purchased a used vehicle and the previous owner had always used my uncle’s brand of oil.

FAA outlines key deadlines in Part 147 AMT school rule

From April 20: The FAA has included several key deadlines as part of an interim final rule overhauling aviation maintenance technician school regulations under FAR Parts 65 and 147. The rule is expected to be officially published in the Federal Register in mid-June, after which the public will have 30-days, or until Mid-July, to submit comments. The rules will become effective in mid-October, or 120 days after they are published in the Federal Register.

FAA awards $5M in grants to develop aviation Mx techs

From Jan. 19: The FAA has awarded $5 million in grants to 15 organizations and institutions in 14 states through the Aviation Maintenance Technical Workers Workforce Development Grants program. These grants go to organizations and institutions that teach technical skills and prepare a diverse group of people to pursue aviation maintenance careers.
