Latest aviation mechanic standards released

From April 20: The new Aviation Mechanic — General, Airframe, and Powerplant Airman Certification Standards will begin shipping by the end of July, officials with Aviation Supplies & Academics report.
The newly released FAA publication defines the aeronautical knowledge, risk management, and skills required for the mechanic certificate.

Gulfstream G800 makes maiden flight

From June 29: Gulfstream Aerospace Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics, announced that the new long-range Gulfstream G800 successfully completed its first flight, officially launching the flight-test program.

More thorough preflights needed after maintenance

From Sept. 28: According to author Janice Wood: Every month I put together the NTSB Accident Reports and the Aviation Safety Reporting System posts for General Aviation News. And month after month I see a similar pattern in those reports, with pilots running out of fuel or flying scarily close to another airplane in the pattern.
Lately, however, I’ve been noticing more reports on accidents and incidents that happen on the first flight after maintenance.

SIC logging is focus of FAA investigation into Boutique Air

From Oct. 5: Boutique Air, a San Francisco-based Part 135 commuter airline and active participant in the Essential Air Service (EAS) market, is in the midst of an FAA investigation into its training and pilot development program (PDP). While there has been no official public acknowledgment of the investigation from Boutique, in late 2021 a letter from CEO Shawn Simpson addressed to the “United States FAA” was posted in numerous online venues.

FAA revokes certificates of Plane Swap pilots

From May 18: The two pilots who attempted to swap planes on live TV have had their pilot certificates revoked by the FAA.
Luke Aikins and Andy Farrington, cousins, pilots, skydivers, and members of the Red Bull Air Force, attempted to swap Cessna 182s on April 24, 2022, over the desert outside Phoenix, Arizona. The stunt was aired live on Hulu.
The two pilots flew their planes to 12,000 feet, then put the planes in a nosedive. They then jumped out of their planes, attempting to skydive into the other plane and landing it safely.

Does this low-time aircraft engine really need an overhaul?

From Sept. 7: Question for Paul McBride, the General Aviation News engines expert: I put my 1959 Cessna 182 in for its annual inspection and we found a cylinder with low compression. After pulling the cylinder, my mechanic says the engine needs overhauled due to the condition of the cam and lifters. I replaced all lifters four years ago. Why would the lifters be pitted? Looking at the cam do you think it should be torn down?

FAA's statement on mysterious air traffic halt leaves more questions than answers

From Jan. 12: The Federal Aviation Administration has finally put out an official statement regarding a still very mysterious ground stop order that it issued to all aircraft in the western U.S. and Hawaii yesterday around 2:30 PM PST. While the incident is now confirmed, there are still a significant number of unanswered questions, including the most important one: what triggered this decision in the first place? 1,000 technicians by 2026: United Airlines launches apprenticeship program

From Nov. 9: United Airlines announced on November 2nd that it would launch Calibrate, an Aircraft Maintenance Technician (AMT) program. This program will incorporate an in-house AMT apprenticeship. It plans to use this resource to create a fluid pipeline for AMTs to work for United, and hopes to train more than 1,000 qualified AMTs by 2026. The airline plans to have 50% of these students be women or people of color. The first program will be opened next week in Houston.

Aviation Mechanic Handbook updated

From Aug. 31: Aviation Supplies & Academics has released the eighth edition of the Aviation Mechanic Handbook.
Written by Dale Crane, the handbook compiles specs from stacks of reference books and government publications into a toolbox-size guide, full of information critical to maintaining an aircraft, according to ASA officials.

How often should you change your airplane's oil?

From July 27: According to author Ben Visser: Recently, I was talking to an engine rebuilder about oil change intervals for aircraft engines. He related an experience with a plane owner who was having him do an annual inspection on his aircraft.
A problem came up when the mechanic listed an oil change as part of the inspection, even though the aircraft had been flown just 12 hours in the last 12 months.
