The 2014 Winter Conference, Membership Meeting & Expo starts on Sunday, February 23, 2014. I and the PBUS Board of Directors look forward to seeing all of you there!

This conference will feature many interesting and informative breakout sessions and general sessions, all geared to provide you with information and knowledge so you and your business can continue to thrive in the bail industry. The conference is a great opportunity for you to network with your fellow bail agents and welcome new members to the PBUS family. We are also excited to bring you an innovative smartphone application to help keep you up-to-date on all of the conference sessions and events. Download instructions will be available at the conference.

Please don't hesitate to give us your feedback on the 2014 winter conference and what you would like to see at future conferences. And remember our slogan for this year's conference: "Bail Agents Standing Together." We need all of you to continue to make our conferences better and bigger!

Bond set at $2 million for suspect in Dallas police shooting
Rakeem Perkins — the man Dallas police had sought in connection with the shooting of Officer Joshua Burns — was in the Dallas County Jail after surrendering at Dallas police headquarters. During the incident, Burns was shot multiple times in the leg, shoulder and his bullet-proof vest.

Study: Crime rates higher in counties with Wal-Mart additions

The study — "Rolling back prices and raising crime rates? The Wal-Mart effect on crime in the United States," — examined 3,109 counties across the United States, comparing property and violent crime rates in 767 counties where Wal-Mart expanded with similar counties where they did not build.

After committing a crime, guilt and shame predict re-offense
Science Codex
New research suggests that the degree to which inmates' express guilt or shame may provide an indicator of how likely they are to re-offend. The findings show that inmates who feel guilt about specific behaviors are more likely to stay out of jail later on, whereas those that are inclined to feel shame about the self might not.
