Police Chief Andy Robinson of York, S.C., expressed frustration at the "flawed" criminal justice system he said let 11 accused drug dealers arrested in a joint police and drug unit sting back on the streets. VideoBriefGreg Peterson, a GOP activist who was charged with raping several women, was found dead in his Wasatch County, Utah cabin. In a press conference, Wasatch County Sheriff Todd Bonner said Peterson's body was found by a bail bondsman in one of the cabin's upstairs bedrooms. He had a gunshot wound to the head. More

California city, county having success with offender re-entry

California's San Jose City Council and the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors say they are seeing some success with the re-entry of ex-convicts into society, but less success eliminating chronic homelessness. Assembly Bill 109, which addresses prisoners' re-entry into society or the realignment of those sentenced to state prison as nonviolent, nonserious, non-sex offenders, appears to be working out better than expected. As county jails around California swell with inmates, some liberal organizations are pushing counties and the state to adopt programs that would let qualified detainees out of jail without having to post bail. These pretrial programs, which are used to reduce jail populations in San Francisco, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz, allow nonviolent defendants who cannot afford bail to continue living at home, to work and to care for their children while they await trial. ACLU claims LA bail denials illegal

The Los Angeles County sheriff has wrongfully denied bail to people federal immigration officials wanted held, a civil liberties lawsuit claims. The American Civil Liberties Union said it planned to file a lawsuit over what it said was Sheriff Lee Baca's blanket denial of bonds for thousands of people in local jails who had holds from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Los Angeles Times reported.
