Colorado police hunt man after tip from bail bondsman

Police in Colorado Springs, Colo., were on the hunt for a man wanted on several warrants after they say he and two friends got in a car chase with officers, then ran from their vehicle. It started when a bail bondsman called police to report that he was following a car that reportedly had a bank robbery suspect inside. More

Corrections officials are looking to drop the arrest warrants of thousands of parole violators in an attempt to relieve crowding in California's state prisons and county jails and ease the workload of agents by focusing on dangerous felons, a newspaper reported. The state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation planned to begin a major review of more than 9,200 outstanding warrants of parole violators, the Los Angeles Times reported. More

New Orleans pretrial services program's future in doubt
after city council hearing

A pretrial services program that began this year at New Orleans' Criminal District Court has drawn praise from all quarters of the criminal justice system, but its future was in doubt after a city council budget hearing. Under the program, screeners interview and study the records of people accused of felonies, seeking to determine whether they should be held in jail or released, either with or without bail. Marin County, Calif., criminal justice staffers won high praise for developing a progressive program that handles nonviolent inmates and parolees formerly supervised by the state. With a first-year state grant of $1.3 million and another $4.5 million for this fiscal year, officials put together a program that deals with inmate and parolee supervision and monitoring, in-custody treatment including mental health and drug detoxification, and help finding housing and jobs.
