Many Americans are reluctant to embrace self-driving vehicle technology, recent survey results suggest.
Fifty-four percent of respondents to the Northeastern University/Gallup survey said they are unlikely to use fully self-driving cars, and 59 percent say they would be uncomfortable riding in the vehicles on a daily basis. Additionally, 62 percent say they would not be comfortable sharing the road with self-driving trucks.

The opioid epidemic has cost the U.S. more than a trillion dollars since 2001, according to a new study, and may exceed another $500 billion over the next three years.
The report by Altarum, a nonprofit group that studies the health economy, examined CDC mortality data through June of last year. The greatest financial cost of the opioid epidemic, according to the report, is in lost earnings and productivity losses to employers.

Bexar County Commissioner Kevin Wolff believes that a meeting he had last month in Washington with federal transportation officials could lead to construction of lanes for driverless automated vehicles on the Austin-San Antonio section of Interstate 35.
"This is the first proposal of its kind in the nation that I'm aware of," Wolff said. "And when the feds heard about it, they told me, 'This is just the kind of proposal we want to fund.'"

A wind-driven wildfire in rural central California threatened hundreds of buildings Monday, including a historic railroad station, but officials said they made some gains after the flames exploded in size.
