The speed and scale of digital rollouts are putting risk and internal audit professionals in a difficult spot, and the smarter risk managers are making more use of data and digital capabilities to inform their decisions, according to a new study from consulting firm PwC. The firm's Risk in Review study said when risk management is at the top of its game, "leaders have a clear line of sight into threats for informed decision making." The report is based on a global survey of 2,073 CEOs, board members and professionals in risk management, internal audit and compliance, conducted in October and November 2018, and described six habits risk functions follow that help their companies set a course for sustainable growth.

Public safety agencies are working to better respond to an increasingly technology-reliant public, while at the same time making more effective use of such technology themselves. Many of the devices and services they are turning to require LTE broadband availability — which means relying on commercial mobile networks. AT&T chief financial officer John Stephens recently said at an investor conference that while the first responder market in the U.S. is estimated to be around 3 million people, the number of connected devices involved means that AT&T — which is part of a public-private partnership to build out the nationwide FirstNet LTE network — thinks of the overall market opportunity as closer to 10 million.

Envision managing the risk of a volatile, staggeringly lucrative, 100 percent federally legal enterprise? Toss in ridiculously inconsistent federal, state and local regulations, insanely evolving technologies and efficiencies and an industrywide disinclination to ever “play by the rules.” However, when armed with decent risk management fundamentals, a marijuana-related business can diminish most horrible outcomes, fortify the enterprise’s sustained growth and maybe even get rich along the way.

Recent incidents aside, air travel is incredibly safe these days. Global airplane fatalities averaged 840 a year from 2010 to 2018, compared with almost 2,000 in the 1990s. In fact, this decade is on pace to see the fewest casualties since the dawn of jet travel in the 1930s. Yet the recent crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 serves as a stark reminder that despite the significant safety gains in commercial aviation, accidents are still possible. And when they occur, the number of fatalities is often large.

Just before his shooting spree at two Christchurch, New Zealand mosques, the alleged mass murderer posted a hate-filled manifesto on several file-sharing sites, and emailed the document to at least 30 people, including New Zealand’s prime minister. He also posted on several social media sites links to the manifesto and instructions on how to find his Facebook profile to watch an upcoming video. The video turned out to be a 17-minute Facebook livestream of preparing for and carrying out the first attack. In his posts, the accused killer urged people to make copies of the manifesto and the video, and share them around the internet.

For years, many people hailed body-worn cameras as a potential key to improving police transparency and strengthening often-fractured relationships with the communities they serve. But so far, academic research suggests the technology largely hasn't lived up to those expectations. That’s the conclusion of a new report from the Center for Evidence-Based Crime Policy at George Mason University. Researchers reviewed 70 empirical studies on body cameras' effects, ranging from officer and citizen behavior to influences on law enforcement agencies as a whole. While much of the research remains mixed, it counters some promised benefits of body cameras at a time when departments are increasingly adopting the technology.
