Federal grant of $3.2 million likely to spare 30 St. Louis firefighters

The city has won a federal grant worth $3.2 million, which will almost certainly spare 30 firefighter jobs from imminent layoffs. The Department of Homeland Security notified Rep. Russ Carnahan's office this morning via email. "They've got the grant," said Sara Howard, Carnahan's communications director. "It means they've got the money for the jobs." More

New liability law aimed at growing Indiana's agritourism industry

A bill that has passed through the Indiana legislature is making it easier for an industry with roots in Southern Indiana to grow — agritourism. House Bill 1133, which has been signed into law by Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, goes into effect July 1. It significantly reduces the liability for an injury or death that would occur because of the "inherent risk" of the activity taking place at a location. More

Slain officer's widow sues Charleston, W.Va.'s insurance company

The widow of a Charleston, W.Va., police officer who was killed by friendly fire following a high-speed chase in 2009 has sued the city's insurance carrier. In the petition, filed in Kanawha Circuit Court, Samantha Jones asks for a judge to declare that the Underwriters at Lloyd's, London is responsible for the city's underinsured motorist coverage. Sacramento, Calif., loses $16 million crosswalk verdict

A young doctor in Sacramento, Calif., who was permanently disabled after being struck in a crosswalk has been awarded $16 million by a jury, largely because the city knew the crossing was dangerous. Because of a prior agreement between attorneys, however, the city's liability will be capped at $6 million, of which $4 million is covered by insurance. More
