City court officials in Austin, Texas, used to spend a lot of time answering rote questions related to parking tickets, court dates and other issues. Then about two years ago, the city began using a chatbot to field these requests. The move made life easier not only for workers in the court system, but also residents. “They had a challenge with individuals coming down, asking questions about paying tickets,” explained Austin CIO Stephen Elkins during a panel discussion last week at the Smart Cities Connect Conference in Denver.

As the efficiency of operational risk management remains a top priority and pressure to maximize value increases, emerging technology could prove crucial. The ability to demonstrate the value of op-risk management frameworks — with risk managers being increasingly expected to do more with less — is increasing. Although Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) statistics show a decrease in on-the-job fatalities, transportation remains the most dangerous vocation. The report reveals that transportation incidents were the leading cause of fatal workplace injuries from 2011 to 2016, accounting for 11,846 deaths. "Nuna, I’ll be back. I love you." Those words are etched in Cissy Strong’s mind when she recalls the last day she saw her younger sister, Rosenda. It’s tornado season in Oklahoma; that time every year when Paula Burkes' neighbor shuffles the beloved baby portraits of her kids from the mantle to the storm shelter. For businesses, the seasonal fear, of course, is that they’ll lose their most precious asset: data. Oklahoma City-based Midcon Recovery Solutions has a precaution for that: two unmarked, double steel-reinforced, windowless concrete buildings in Oklahoma City and one in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, in which the company hosts the data of hundreds of organizations — from energy and telecommunications companies to insurance agencies and banks. For $100 a month to several thousands of dollars, companies rent rack spaces of 1 3/4 inches to 200 square feet.

Federal figures show that 37,133 people — pedestrians and cyclists among them — lost their lives in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2017. While that figure is down nearly 2% from 2016, it’s still equivalent to about 100 people dying each day in traffic incidents.
