New statistics released Tuesday by U.S. Customs and Border Protection reveal that the rate of digital border searches is on pace to quadruple since 2015. That means more and more travelers entering the U.S. are being asked to turn over their electronic devices to be analyzed.
The increase appears to have begun even before President Donald Trump’s promise to scrutinize incoming visitors with “extreme vetting” measures, some of which included stepping up digital surveillance.

The city of Dallas has brought in help from Federal Communication Commission to assist in its investigation of a hacking incident late Friday night where all of the city’s 156 outdoor emergency sirens were set off and wailed for about an hour before authorities could take the system offline early Saturday.
The incident prompted the city’s 9-1-1 system to be flooded with phone calls.

Accenture, a professional services and global management consulting company, conducted the study, which questioned about 3,500 U.S. citizens, and released the results this week.

A cadre of shadowy criminal hackers seizes control of an energy plant. They give themselves administrator privileges and lock the genuine administrators out along with everyone else. Then, they threaten to trigger a major leak or explosion if the plant owners don’t pay up: $50 million in bitcoin.

group of bipartisan lawmakers, including 13 from Florida, which suffered Zika outbreaks last year, wants Congress to create a fund to quickly fight diseases.
The group of 20 House members wants Congress to provide $300 million for a fund that responds swiftly to outbreaks. The request, sent in a letter to congressional appropriators, comes after Congress debated how much money to provide to fight the Zika virus last year.

Firefighters are battling wildfires from the top of Florida near the Georgia line to Miami-Dade County in the south as the governor declared a state of emergency Tuesday.
Gov. Rick Scott said the proclamation will make it easier for state, regional and local agencies to "quickly work together to protect our families, visitors and communities" as authorities battle more than 100 wildfires around the state.
