NICB: New York City tops list of cities with most questionable claims

New York City tops the list of U.S. cities with the highest number of questionable insurance claims, according to the latest analysis by the National Insurance Crime Bureau. The NICB's annual look at questionable claims in the United States showed that the Big Apple was home to 13,564 questionable claims from 2010 to 2012 — nearly double the number of questionable claims found in Los Angeles, the city with the second-highest number of such claims. The NICB's latest report was published May 16.

Obama pledges all necessary help for storm-hit Oklahoma
U.S. President Barack Obama recently offered condolences for the victims of a deadly tornado in Oklahoma and pledged to focus the nation's resources on recovery and rebuilding. "As a nation, our full focus right now is on the urgent work of rescue and the hard work of recovery and rebuilding that lies ahead," he said at the White House.

Bill to protect local California governments from dog park liability passes assembly
California Assemblyman Mike Gatto, D-Los Angeles, announced that his bill to help local governments create dog parks for their residents, passed the Assembly Floor with a bipartisan vote of 75-0. The idea for the bill came from Glendale City Councilmember Laura Friedman, who told Gatto that liability concerns were preventing cities from opening more dog parks.

Pension plan changes should save city millions

The Common Council recently unanimously agreed to make changes to the city's retirement benefits plan that should save the city as much as $90 million over the next 20 years. The changes would affect only new employees who enroll as members after Jan. 1, 2014. The changes would also affect elected officials, but not public-service employees.

Tree crushes cars; South Pittsburg, Tenn., says it's not liable

When high winds toppled a large tree in front of Christ Episcopal Church in South Pittsburg, Tenn., it crushed three cars on its way to the ground. Terrie Smallwood said two of the cars' owners had comprehensive insurance to cover the damage, but her daughter, Taylor, did not.
