Texas Gov. Greg Abbott unveiled a plan recently to improve school safety, including allowing law enforcement officers to take breaks and fill out reports in schools and increasing the number of armed school marshals in classrooms. Known as the governor's School and Firearm Safety Action Plan, the 40-page list of recommendations includes more than $120 million in funding from various sources for increased law enforcement presence in schools and training for armed marshals.

A recent study found that the use of drones in the public safety sector has greatly increased. According to a study by the Center for the Study of the Drone at Bard College, at least 910 public safety agencies including fire, police and EMS departments are now using drones. They also found that the number of agencies using drones has increased by around 82 percent in the last year alone, and that there are twice as many agencies that own drones as there are that own manned aircrafts.

The Department of Commerce and Department of Homeland Security recently released a joint report detailing how the federal government can combat botnets, or networks of infected internet-connected devices that can be leveraged by malicious hackers. The latest report largely resembles the draft report issued by the two federal agencies in January, which gave experts from the cybersecurity industry as well as other stakeholders the opportunity weigh in on their findings before releasing the final report.

Seven months before he shot and killed 17 people at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in February, Nikolas Cruz posted a photo of his arsenal on Instagram, prompting Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel to describe Cruz's social media content as "very, very disturbing."
