Long Beach & Los Angeles announce $53 million security grant

The cities of Long Beach and Los Angeles will receive $53 million homeland security grant to enhance preparedness in the event of a terrorist attack. The full grant is worth more than $69.9 million but the California Emergency Management Agency (CalEMA) retains 20 percent of the award, and "administrative costs" also equate to an additional five percent. In an address before the attendees of the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety & Security conference in New Orleans, La., Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said that sports security should be top of mind, as evidence by the World Cup terror attacks in Uganda, Munich 1972 and Atlanta in 1996. The city of Willmar, Minn., is taking steps to reduce the increase in the cost of liability and property insurance. The city's annual insurance premium was proposed to increase 21.8 percent from $124,922 in 2010 to $152,222 in 2011. The increase was due to two to three large claims during the past couple of years. Governor Bill Richardson announced he is committing $685,000 in Recovery Act funds to help replace critical fire safety equipment for Albuquerque firefighters. Governor Richardson was joined at the announcement by Albuquerque Mayor Richard J. Berry who highlighted the city is investing an additional $150,000 in the equipment. More
