More than 3,000 firefighters are working to contain the Mendocino Complex Fire 100 miles north of San Francisco, now the largest in California history, and over the weekend, lightning strikes sparked dozens of new wildfires across the state of Washington. Near Mount Shasta, the deadly Carr Fire has so far incinerated 1,077 homes, forced mass evacuations, and killed eight.

Los Angeles County's rail system will be the first in the United States to deploy body scanners that can detect suicide vests and other improvised explosives, transportation officials said Tuesday.
Later this year, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will deploy several portable scanners that can be moved to any of the system's 93 subway and light-rail stations.

The automobile is a killer. In the U.S., 36,675 people died in traffic accidents in 2014. The year before, 2.3 million people were injured in traffic accidents.
During the past decade, over 438 U.S. municipalities, including 36 of the 50 most populous cities, have employed electronic monitoring programs in order to reduce the number of accidents. Red light camera programs specifically target drivers that run red lights.

Say the Poulsbo, Washington, Police Department gets a 911 call about somebody with a mental health problem disturbing the peace in a public area. The cops show up and arrest that person. Poulsbo is a small town, so the person winds up in Kitsap County Jail, a half-hour’s drive south in Port Orchard.
“More often than not, the Port Orchard [police] will have an interaction with them,” said Penelope Sapp, a lieutenant in Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office.

The California Cybersecurity Integration Center alerted its partners to the Thomas Fire along Interstate 5, before the largest wildfire in the state’s modern history was phoned in last December.
Someone had taken to Twitter to first report the blaze, and Cal-CSIC’s media scrapers — which plug into its automated threat feed — noticed.
