Bid to ban guns in public buildings goes to Portland, Ore., council

The City Council will consider a proposal to ask the state Legislature to ban guns in public buildings throughout Oregon. Dan Skolnik and John Coyne, members of the council's Public Safety Committee, voted recently to recommend adoption of the measure. The committee's other member, Kevin Donoghue, was absent. More

The Department of Homeland Security has embarked on a nationwide campaign to promote safe computing habits amid rising concerns over Web-borne threats. The "Stop. Think. Connect." campaign, launched in October, which for the past seven years has been designated national cybersecurity awareness month, focuses on broad-based public education about the evolving nature of online security, offering a host of resources for parents and educators available for download at the campaign's website. Oakland, Calif., panel votes to increase medical cannabis clubs

After six years of limiting to four the number of medical cannabis dispensaries that can legally operate in Oakland, Calif., city officials are poised to double that cap. Along with new legislation that would increase the number of licensed clubs to eight, the Oakland Public Safety Committee voted unanimously to double the annual fees paid by the clubs from $30,000 to $60,000, which city staff members estimate is a more realistic cost to oversee eight dispensaries. More

When Gustavo Sánchez became mayor of Tancítaro, in the heart of Mexico's drug country, he knew the job made him a target of the country's drug cartels. "The fear is always there," he told The Arizona Republic in January. "But if you have courage and a desire to make a contribution, that outweighs the fear."
