The U.S. Justice Department is set to free 6,000 inmates from federal prison between Oct. 30 and Nov. 2 in an effort to reduce prison crowding and the long punishments given to drug offenders three decades ago.
The move marks the largest one-time release of inmates from federal prison, and follows action by the U.S. Sentencing Commission in 2014 to minimize potential punishments for future drug offenders.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says there are no risks to humans from exposure to the common insecticide chlorpyrifos from food, but the agency has nonetheless asked for public comment on a proposal to revoke all food residue tolerances for the insecticide, which is mostly used on fruits, vegetable and nut crops. The proposed ban will not affect the 2016 growing season.
