Insurance companies in California have increasingly been dropping people who live in fire-damaged areas from home insurance policies, a practice that state regulators have now temporarily banned. The new state policy creates a one-year moratorium on the practice that will cover at least 800,000 homes across the state located in zip codes that have been affected by wildfires. Ricardo Lara, California’s insurance commissioner, said the state has also asked insurance companies to voluntarily stop dropping customers anywhere in the state because of fire risks for at least one year.

Government Technology
A few years ago, Government Technology asked a question about making social media more accessible during our Government Social Media Twitter chat. The quiet response from participating social media professionals was characterized by the GIF someone tweeted in response; you may have seen it — the one where Homer Simpson silently backs up into a hedge of bushes until he disappears completely. Accessibility has long been a requirement and a standard in the world of government websites.

U.S. Rep. Jerrold Nadler – a New York Democrat who, as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, is overseeing the presidential impeachment hearings – has somehow found the time to co-sponsor a piece of legislation that has nothing to do with Donald Trump but has huge implications for co-ops, condominiums, and homeowners’ associations (HOAs). The Disaster Assistance Equity Act (H.R. 5337) would make two significant changes to the existing Disaster Relief Act.

As a public leader, whether you’re an elected official or the head of an agency, it’s easy to spend all of your time consumed by the crisis of the week or of the day. What keeps Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy up at night? Things like not knowing, nearly one-quarter into the fiscal year, whether his service is going to be able to start new programs, or even keep civilian staff at work. “The reality of it, I think, is just the challenges of getting things done in Washington,” McCarthy said at the recent Reagan National Defense Forum. “We gotta be less partisan. We gotta work better together” to modernize the force.

What should you do if someone is operating a drone near you? Where should you move? Should you be a certain number of feet away from the machine? These are the sort of questions that police, firefighters and other stakeholders hope to clarify as part of the Major Cities Working Group, a new initiative from the DRONERESPONDERS program. The Major Cities Working Group launched during the Drone Journalism Leadership Summit in New York last month.

The most destructive and costliest wildfire in California’s history, the Camp Fire, killed 85 people and destroyed nearly 19,000 structures in November 2018. A year later, crews were still collecting and carrying away piles of wood, metals, appliances, contaminated soil, toxic household chemicals and other debris and waste totaling more than 3.2 million metric tons — roughly the weight of 2 million cars. Hurricane Michael, which hit Florida in October 2018, left about 13 million cubic meters of debris.

Preliminary results from a Design Thinking workshop organized within the scope of the international ResponDrone project, held in Thessaloniki last month, indicate that first responders view the constant provision of real-time information in crisis situations as one of the most valued benefits arising from the usage of drones in disaster management missions. The workshop, attended by representatives from first responder organizations and industry partners of the ResponDrone consortium, was held in order to assess the best possible system requirements.
