New urban park, waterfront trail to be centrepiece of Ontario Place revitalization

The shuttered Ontario Place will get a new urban park and waterfront trail, Ontario's Minister of Tourism and Culture Michael Chan announced. Mr. Chan told a press conference on the former tourist attraction's now-empty grounds that the revitalization plan means Ontario Place grounds will be open to the public year-round.

Groundbreaking for new Engineering Building at York University by ZAS Architects + Interiors

York University took a major step toward construction of a new Engineering Building with a groundbreaking ceremony for the $85 million project. The new Engineering Building will be home to the Lassonde School of Engineering, which aims to graduate entrepreneurial engineers with a social conscience and a sense of global citizenship. "This is a great day for York," said President and Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri.

De loin, la tour ressemble à une grosse peluche pour enfant. On a pratiquement envie de se rapprocher pour la flatter. De près par contre, c'est une toute autre histoire. Dessiné par la firme Belatchew Arkitekter, le Strawscraper est actuellement en construction à Stockholm, en Suède. Le projet consiste à bâtir une extension à une tour existante, la Söder Torn, en y ajoutant notamment une structure extérieure qui produira de l'énergie.

Richmond Firehall No.2 / HCMA
After extensive study, the City of Richmond decided to replace an existing 40 year old fire hall, which no longer met the needs of the community, with a new state of the art post-disaster facility. The City's goals for the project included the provision of an iconic civic facility marking the entry into the Steveston area of the community. The previous fire hall was located at this same location, however in order to accommodate the current requirements an adjacent residential property was acquired and integrated into the site.

Bug protein and vertical forests: 5 world-changing ideas
Bosco Verticale means "vertical forest" in Italian, and soon that's what will stand among the skyscrapers of downtown Milan. The project is slated for completion in December and will feature two dramatic, verdant residential towers, 150 and 84 m tall. Planted with thousands of trees and shrubs,they will soar over the city's Isola neighbourhood. Italian architect Stefano Boeri, who designed the development, is hoping it will be the first step toward making polluted Milan a "bio-diverse metropolis," where green space is ubiquitous.

MoMA and Foursquare team up for an architecture scavenger hunt

The MoMA museum recently teamed up with Foursquare to bring you New York's ultimative architectural scavenger hunt. The guide consists of 21 "landmarks of modern architecture," featuring buildings that exhibit aesthetic, tectonic, and construction qualities affiliated with the Modern movement. More specifically, the curated list of buildings focuses on those that bear the influence of proto-modern architect Henri Labrouste and his modernist successor Le Corbusier.

Warming hut nets local architecture firms international award

Three small Winnipeg firms have combined their skills to win a prestigious international award that landed their made-in-Manitoba project on the cover of Azure Magazine, Canada's preeminent architecture publication. The Hygge House design — dreamed up by Urbanink, Pike Projects and Plains Projects — is also featured in a two-page spread in Azure, which is now on newsstands. The award was for Best Temporary or Demonstration Architecture as well as the People's Choice Award for that category.

Closure of public lane to new Winnipeg skyscraper gets backing

Plans to close a public lane for a new 29-storey hotel and condo tower mere metres from Portage Avenue and Main Street got support from a city committee recently. Construction on the building, dubbed Project W for now and located between 201 Portage Ave. and Whiskey Dix bar, is expected to get underway in August, but in order for the project to go forward, parts of a back lane between Main and Albert streets would need to close.
