Jury finalized for 2015 Canadian Architect Awards of Excellence

The Canadian Architect Awards of Excellence is an annual awards program open to all architects registered in Canada and to Canadian architectural graduates for buildings designed in Canada and abroad. Foreign architects are permitted to submit, provided they have partnered with a Canadian registered architect.

Wood towers go from 'forest to frame'

While Ontario has only just approved wood as a material for mid-rise structures up to six storeys, Vancouver architect Michael Green is at the forefront of a push to design and build highrise towers using cross laminated timber (CLT) also known as mass timber. Green and his team at Michael Green Architecture have already completed the eight-storey Wood Innovation Design Centre (WIDC) in Prince George, B.C. at the University of Northern British Columbia, winning the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) Innovation in Architecture award for 2015. At 29.5 metres, it is North America's tallest timber building.

Montréal manque de planification urbanistique, selon Phyllis Lambert
La fondatrice du Centre canadien d'architecture et d'Héritage Montréal, Phyllis Lambert, joint sa voix aux détracteurs du projet de réaménagement de la Maison Alcan, rue Sherbrooke Ouest, au centre-ville de Montréal.L'ancien siège social de l'aluminerie Alcan, qui appartient désormais à une entreprise du fondateur du Cirque du Soleil, Guy Laliberté, pourrait être transformé en tour commerciale de 30 étages. Pour l'architecte et philanthrope montréalaise, on ne peut construire des gratte-ciel sans planification. Il en va de l'avenir de la ville, selon elle.

Canadian firm Norr Group likely to design Shivaji Memorial

Canadian architecture firm Norr Group is likely to design the Chhatrapati Shivaji Memorial proposed to come up near Mumbai in the Arabian Sea. Norr has also previously designed the famous Burj Khalifa and Atlantis-The Palm in the sea in Dubai. The proposed Rs 1,900 crore Shivaji Memorial that had twice failed to attract more than a single bid for the job of the project management consultant (PMC) has now received bids from three international consultants.

Only a handful of Edmonton buildings survived from 1915. Why should the next 100 years be any different? Nonetheless, some of our modern buildings will make the cut. Indeed, there’s no debate that certain old buildings must be preserved, everything from the Alberta Legislature to the Hotel Macdonald. But what about all those glass box buildings we erected from 1950 to 1980? Do any of them merit still being here in 2115?

Retour du festival Bellastock
Le festival d'architecture expérimentale organisé par Bellastock Québec est de retour à Montréal pour une deuxième année consécutive. L'évènement se tiendra du 28 au 30 août 2015, et aura pour thème la piétonnisation de la rue Island, à Pointe-Saint-Charles. Les participants devront réfléchir à des moyens de faire ressortir l'identité du quartier tout en incitant les passants à venir l'explorer.

The Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Finance and Minister Responsible for the GTA, recently announced funding of up to $18.4 million for Centennial College's Downsview Park Aerospace Campus under the federal government's New Building Canada Plan.
