Winners of the 2013 Air Canada En Route Hotel Design Awards announced

The Air Canada enRoute Hotel Design Awards celebrate the best Canadian-designed hotels around the world. The award-winning projects show that no matter where you go, Canadian interior designers and architects are there to make you feel at home. Air Canada's enRoute, in partnership with Interior Designers of Canada, Architecture Canada | RAIC and IIDEX Canada, invited Canadian architects and interior designers to submit new and extensively renovated hotels completed between Jan. 1, 2011 and Dec. 31, 2012.

4 teams shortlisted to design new central library in Calgary

Four shortlisted teams have been asked to design proposals for a new central library in the Canadian city of Calgary. Selected from 38 submissions, the competing teams of local and international architects will harness the power of platemaking to envision a 280,000 square-foot "landmark" for the East Village Calgary.

Collège Boréal to offer architecture programs

Hot on the heels of the Laurentian University School of Architecture's grand opening, the province has approved two related programs at Collège Boréal. The college will offer an architecture techniques program and an architectural technology program starting in September 2014. The two-year architectural techniques program will give Collège Boréal students the job skills they need to practise this profession within architectural and engineering firms.

Downtown Toronto Mercer St. heritage building at centre of tug-of-war over its future

Its owner and award-winning filmmaker tenant love the red-brick building at 24 Mercer St., yet want it torn down and redeveloped into a boutique condo building. And there appears to be no community opposition despite the building's designation as a heritage property. Nevertheless, staff in Toronto's planning division are recommending that city council refuse the proposed teardown.

Thunder Bay architects win award for Gathering Circle

The architects behind a unique structure at Thunder Bay's marina have been recognized with an international award. The Gathering Circle, an outdoor pavilion in the Spirit Garden at the city's waterfront, was designed by Ojibway architect Ryan Gorrie and the Brook McIIroy Architectural Firm in Thunder Bay.
