RV sales rolling along with better economy
Billings Gazette
Manufacturers of recreational vehicles, a made-in-America symbol of money and luxury, expect to sell 7.5 percent more RVs to dealers this year. That's according to RVIA. Pent-up demand for RVs, a stabilizing economy, low interest rates and stock market indices setting record highs are reasons for the jump. But that estimate is too low for Montana, says Dean Benjamin, sales manager at RVDA member Pierce Homes & RV of Billings. "We just finished our best March ever by a long shot," he says.

RV Learning Center webinar: Complying with federal employee leave laws
The RV Learning Center
The Federal Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides leave for qualifying individuals for their own serious health condition or to care for a close relative. Employees injured on the job may qualify for leave under the workers' compensation program. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides leave as a reasonable accommodation of a qualifying disability. COBRA governs when an employee is entitled to continuation of health care benefits at his or her cost. Sound confusing? A nationally known employment/labor attorney will provide expert advice on managing employee leaves and reducing the risk of lawsuits and fines during a free webinar tomorrow, April 11. The session, which starts at noon EDT, is sponsored by the RV Learning Center and RVDA associate KPA.

In the third installment of a four-part series about a couple's transformation into full-time RVers, they put their house on the market, buy a fifth wheel and pickup, and set up a mail-forwarding service in their chosen state of residence. Parking the living room
The Billings Gazette
With the big-boy RVs stretching nearly 50 feet — many pulling trailers full of toys — turning and parking in campgrounds can be a problem. People no longer back into campsites; they want drive-thrus. That change, plus the demand for more modern amenities, has created challenges for Doug Mulvaney, manager of facilities development at Kampgrounds of America.

Today's RVs are homes away from home
Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier
RV ownership has reached record levels recently — 8.9 million American households — and is expected to grow even faster as baby boomers retire. At RVDA member Fogdall RV in Cedar Falls, IA, business is up 15 percent, the largest increase for Ace Fogdall, Inc., since 2008, says salesman Don King. "Many of those are repeat customers, and probably 90 percent of our business is of the towable variety, which is more affordable," he says.

Some small businesses opt for the health care penalty
The Wall Street Journal
Small business owners are grappling with whether to offer health insurance to employees next year under the new health care law, or just pay a penalty. Des Moines, IA, business owner Rick Levi now spends about $140,000 annually on health insurance for 25 of his managers. Under the new law, he will have to offer insurance to all of his 102 full-time employees. If everyone takes the coverage, Levi says the cost of premiums could exceed $500,000. It makes more sense, he says, to drop insurance entirely and pay a penalty of about $144,000.
