As you head out on the road this summer, expect to see more RVs and motorhomes, which are experiencing a rebirth. That's welcome news for Winnebago Industries, which survived one of the roughest periods for the RV industry. "During the depths of the recession, we weren't even running the factory at times, it was so slow, business was that bad," says Randy Potts, chairman and CEO. "Now we’re running the factory every week. In fact, people are working overtime."

Recovery, boomers send RV sales roaring back
U.S. News & World Report
This spring, Jenny Miller and her husband bought a trailer to take their one-year-old son camping, but the plan had been in the works long before that. "We had been talking about buying one for a couple of years, and we were just waiting for our finances to get in order so we could make the purchase," says the 29-year-old Davenport, IA, resident. Miller is representative of a broader national trend boosting the RV industry. Recreational vehicle sales crashed during the recession as Americans lost jobs and savings, but now, buyers are back and ready to make the RV purchases they put off for so long.
Portland architect Robert Moreland's RV designs, other tiny houses on wheels
The Oregonian
A few years back, Portland architect Robert Moreland went looking for a motor home that was efficient and stylish. Few met his exacting specifications. He eventually bought a Navion and has owned it four years, but its limitations led him to come up with two designs of his own. "One thing I've always liked about RVing is that it forces you into a simpler, more efficient lifestyle. You have to think about everything you bring aboard, because there’s not a lot of storage, and you have to be aware of resource use since you only have so much water in your tanks or battery capacity," he says.

Slow cooking on the long road to Alaska
By Jerri Grubb
After teaching for a combined 69 years, my husband Larry and I decided it was time for an adults-only field trip. We eagerly started plotting out a two-month trip to Alaska. One day I mentioned the trip to a former co-worker and her husband, who had also been talking about driving their motorhome to Alaska. So the four of us began planning the trip of a lifetime. Our goal was to be as economical as possible on this trip but see everything we wanted.
Industry Pulse: Have you used a slow cooker for meals in your RV?
Last week's survey: Have you ever traveled to Alaska?
Custom RVs: Homes on the road
Specialty Fabrics Review
The news for custom shops that tap into the RV market just seems to get better. Shops that connect with this group of ardent road enthusiasts could enjoy a comfortable niche — and a boost in sales of their services. For every new RV that lands a home, two used RVs are sold, says the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association. And those previously-owned RVs are just begging for a facelift, which often translates into an extensive refurbishing.
