RV business revives, spreading economic benefits

"It's great to be back," said Clint Lehman, a 29-year-old who had been laid off for eight months last year. Called back to work by a surge in demand in the RV industry by Jayco, one of the largest manufacturers in Elkhart County. People are returning to work at some of the best manufacturing wages in the region, but maybe more important, the humming production lines indicate an increased demand for parts suppliers and affiliated businesses in the Chicago area. "The recreation vehicle industry is a leading economic indicator for the nation," said Sid Johnson, the director of marketing for Jayco. "We lead the country into recessions, and we lead the country out of recessions." More

Ken says you meet new people and gain some friendships in return, including avid RVer, John McCorkel, whom regularly retreats to the campground as an escape from home. Albert Rappleyea has been bringing his RV to Pine Valley Campground in Endicott, NY, every summer for the past four years. "Our friends are down here, we all get together every night and have a campfire, and just have a good time down by the lake," said Rappleyea, an RV camper. Although Albert lives in Syracuse, he and his wife make the trip to this campground every weekend - including this past weekend to celebrate Independence Day. His neighbor is an avid RV camper, too.
