Carbon monoxide 'urgent alert' as soaring energy bills raise open fire fears

London Fire Brigade has issued an urgent carbon monoxide warning as it fears soaring energy bills are leading more people to heat their homes using open fires - potentially risking their lives.
The alert comes after firefighters discovered a fire in a north London fireplace that was emitting “dangerously high” levels of the deadly gas, and could have killed everyone in the building.

New fire safety regulations for multi-occupied residential buildings to come into force

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging owners and managers of multi-occupied residential buildings in the County to make sure they understand new fire safety regulations.
The Fire Safety Regulations 2022 are being introduced next week - from 23 January 2023 - and are designed to keep the residents of multi-occupied residential buildings safe from the risk of fire.

Portugal asks Europe for help with firefighting

José Luís Carneiro‘s statements took place in Lisbon during a seminar on the 2022 rural fire season, in which the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, also participated.
“We have just applied for European Union funds for additional aerial firefighting assets that could be part of the rescEU [European Civil Protection Mechanism instrument] transition fleet for the summer of 2023, and I am convinced that we will complete this process with great success”, said the minister.

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service rated fastest rural service in UK

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service has been named the fastest predominantly rural fire service in the U.K., following a recent inspection.
Firefighters were praised for the way they respond to fires and emergencies as the service was rated as "good" in an independent review by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services.

Netherlands to face more uncontrollable wildfires as drought, heat gets worse: experts

The Netherlands will increasingly have to deal with uncontrollable wildfires due to increasing heat and drought. Experts from the Institute of Public Safety, the meteorological institute KNMI, and other knowledge centers issued this warning in a joint report.
"Wildfires are more likely to develop into fires that cannot be extinguished and will only stop when there is no more fuel," the researchers wrote. That fuel consists of, for example, trees and plants. The experts foresee a “major impact on health, well-being, nature, and the economy.”

Call for Nominations: The European Fire Safety Engineering Award
The European Fire Safety Engineering Award is an award to promote developments in the fire safety engineering area in Europe. The awardee has made exceptional efforts in the area of fire safety engineering in the last five years following the SFPE mission:
"To define, develop, and advance the use of engineering best practices; expand the scientific and technical knowledge base; and educate the global fire safety community to reduce fire risk."
Nominees can be both SFPE members and non-members. SFPE members and SFPE Europe chapters' members can submit nominations. Self-nomination is allowed. To nominate a colleague or yourself, please send a one-page motivation to robert.mcnamee@ri.se by 31 January, 2023.
