Depopulation is causing wildfires in Europe
Voxeurop
In the summer of 2021 Europe has seen intense and unprecedented heatwaves, with temperatures spiking above 40 degrees, huge wildfires are raging across several countries in the region. Thousands of hectares of land were destroyed, and people had been evacuated from towns threatened by flames. In some areas droughts are making it hard to control the fires.

Researchers design model that predicts which buildings will survive wildfire
Colorado State University via ScienceDaily
Wildfires may seem unpredictable, leaving random ruin in their wake. Engineers have now developed a model that can predict how wildfire will impact a community down to which buildings will burn. They say predicting damage to the built environment is essential to developing fire mitigation strategies and steps for recovery.

EU wildfire report highlights role of aerial firefighting
AirMed&Rescue
The annual edition of ‘Forest Fires in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa’ has been published by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission.
This report provides information and assessment of forest fires’ effects in the pan-European region during 2021. It also details the efforts of each country for wildlife protection, preparation and firefighting, and how to mitigate forest fires in the first place. It explains the aerial support measures, including helicopter support, aerial firefighting and water buckets.

Fighting fire with fire: Study gauges public perception of prescribed burns
PennState
Setting planned, controlled fires — or prescribed burns — on landscapes can reduce wildfire risks and support habitat restoration, but to be successful these policies also require public support. A new study may fill in gaps in understanding public perception toward prescribed burns in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic, where these fires are increasingly used, according to scientists.

Wildfires and thunderstorms: complex interconnections spawned by climate change
Cosmos Weekly
Fires create their own weather: both nearby, and in distant places. Scientists are starting to unpick exactly how these complex connections weave together.
They used to call it the butterfly effect: the idea that weather patterns are so complex and hard to predict that a butterfly flapping its wings in China could perturb air motions enough to, weeks later, spark a tornado in Kansas.

Wildfire smoke alters immune cells, promoting inflammation
Wildfire Today
Immune cells that normally protect against inflammation and infections can be altered by wildfire smoke to promote inflammation. A long list of diseases are associated with inflammation. Studies have shown that healthy individuals and those with pre-existing conditions are affected by the very small PM2.5 particles produced by wildfire smoke.
