From Feb. 23: As more electric cars take to UK roads, attention is turning to their safety, in particular fire safety.
No matter that petrol and diesel cars can catch fire and many of them do (remember the spate of Vauxhall Zafira fires not so long ago?), an electric vehicle fire (there were 54 in London in 2019) commands a lot more attention.

From May 11: Recent wildfire events (e.g. Mediterranean region, USA, and Australia) showed that this hazard poses a serious threat for wildland–urban interface (WUI) areas around the globe. Furthermore, recent events in regions where wildfire does not constitute a frequent hazard (e.g. Siberia, Scandinavia) indicated that the spatial pattern of wildfire risk might have significantly changed.

From Nov. 24: Lithium-ion batteries are used to power everything from smart watches to electric vehicles, thanks to the large amounts of energy they can store in small spaces. When overheated, however, they're prone to catching fire or even exploding. But recent research offers a possible solution with a new technology that can swiftly put the brakes on a Li-ion battery, shutting it down when it gets too hot.

Upfront capital investment and operational complexity have been the accepted norm of large-scale HPC research but this model presents challenges for companies wishing to run large-scale CFD workloads in the shortest possible time whilst also minimizing capital investment.

Mystery burning ground found in woodlands by jogger

From Oct. 26: A Reddit user in Britain found an area of the forest floor that was mysteriously smoking, with no fire in sight.
User u/TomakaTom shared a video of the strange sight, which showed the ground charred and smoking. "I found it in Blidworth Woods, which is in a village called Blidworth just on the outskirts of Nottinghamshire [in the U.K.]," the poster, who was jogging in the area, told Newsweek.

Indoor commercial storage with fire protection housing

From May 25: Intilion, a battery storage manufacturer based in Paderborn, Germany, presented its first indoor commercial energy storage, with a unique fire protection feature, at the Smarter E trade show in Munich earlier this month.
Although relatively rare, fire hazards in lithium-ion batteries are an important issue.

Is your holiday apartment fire safe?

From Nov. 24: Many holiday apartments in Italy, Spain and Greece are unlikely to have taken appropriate fire safety measures, Which? Travel has found.
Only 14% of Airbnb properties in Italy report having a smoke alarm and 12% declare a carbon monoxide alarm, according to accommodation analysts AirDNA.
In Spain, 27% had a smoke alarm and 13% a carbon monoxide alarm. In Greece, 21% reported having a smoke alarm but only 11% a carbon monoxide alarm.
