Less than three weeks remain until the February 26 registration deadline for the Student Research Showcase, Sigma Xi's online competition. Graduate, undergraduate, and high school students are invited to prepare an abstract, slideshow, and video about their research. Those selected as having the best presentation in their division win up to $500.

Congratulations to 121 undergraduates, master's students, and doctoral candidates who were recently awarded funding from Sigma Xi's Grants-in-Aid of Research program. The total amount awarded was $116,096. This was the first cycle in which a grant was awarded in the new climate science category.

The Distinguished Lectureships program connects outstanding speakers at the leading edge of science and engineering with Sigma Xi chapters across North America and abroad. Speakers serve two-year terms and are featured in interactive, public talks that are held online and moderated by American Scientist editors. Nominations for the 2019–2021 cohort of lecturers will be accepted through March 1.

Member Anne Madden, a postdoctoral research fellow at North Carolina State University, was a speaker earlier this week at TEDx Gateway, India's largest TEDx conference. Her message is that microorganisms are a source of our world's solutions. A video of a similar TED talk that she gave last year in Vancouver is available.

The University of Delaware Chapter is co-sponsoring public events February 12–13 at the university's Newark campus that will celebrate International Darwin Day in honor of Charles Darwin's birthday. Scientists will speak about issues related to evolution such as the earliest life on Earth and the future of biodiversity. READ MORE

Scientific progress in biotechnology and medicine will challenge our notions of the distinction between human treatment and enhancement, equitable distribution of health resources, rights to genetic privacy and genetic nondiscrimination, and more. Sigma Xi wants your input on topics that will be discussed at the Society's 2018 Annual Meeting, which will be October 25–28 at the Hyatt Regency in Burlingame, California. The theme of the meeting is Big Data and the Future of Research, which will feature three symposia. Preliminary symposia topics are Big Data in Medicine and Biological Sciences; Big Data in Physics and Astronomy; and Big Data in Energy, Climate, and the Environment.
