How Sigma Xi Is Supporting Students
Sigma Xi members attended the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Arizona, to award $6,000 to students for their research presentations that demonstrated interdisciplinary teamwork. Meanwhile, the Society wrapped up its 2019 online science communication competition, the Student Research Showcase, after judging nearly 150 presentations and naming the People's Choice Award winner. Undergraduate and graduate students who were selected for Grants in Aid of Research funding will be announced soon.

Honoring the Life of a Barry University Chapter Founding Member
During their spring 2019 induction ceremony, the Barry University Chapter honored the life and contributions of founding chapter member Dr. Teresa Petrino-Lin, who passed away earlier this year. She mentored more than 30 undergraduate research students during her 25 years at Barry University and 20 years as a Sigma Xi member. These students included participants of various National Institutes of Health-funded initiatives for increasing diversity in science, technology, engineering, and math. For 20 years, she also co-directed a summer science research program that introduced high school students primarily from underserved groups to research careers. The chapter established the Dr. Teresa Petrino-Lin Memorial Award for Outstanding Student Presentation to recognize a student who displays curiosity, scientific inquiry, and a strong work ethic.
The inaugural recipient of the Dr. Teresa Petrino-Lin Memorial Award for Outstanding Student Presentation is junior biology major Adrian Almeida, shown with Dr. Teresa Petrino-Lin's husband, Dr. Peter Lin; grandchild, Isabella; daughter-in-law, Danielle; and son, Federico.

Four members of the San Diego Chapter — Lucy Eskeland, George Edw. Seymour, Pranav Mathur, and Tad Reynales — attended the Greater San Diego Science & Engineering Fair. They reviewed projects, interviewed students, and chose six projects from students in 7th to 11th grades for awards. The six students were invited to attend the chapter's annual awards banquet to discuss their project and address questions. They also received a Sigma Xi certificate, monetary award, T-shirt from the event, and an invitation to join the chapter as associate members.
