Since 1977, the award has honored science and engineering teachers who have made notable contributions to motivating and encouraging research by educating students. The award consists of a medal, $10,000, and a day-long symposium focusing on the achievements of the winner's former students.

During its annual meeting on September 30, the National Academy of Engineering presented two awards for extraordinary impact on the engineering profession. The Simon Ramo Founders Award was presented to Sigma Xi member Thomas Kailath for his research contributions and leadership in engineering. He is the Hitachi America Professor of Engineering, Emeritus, at Stanford University. The academy's Arthur M. Bueche Award was given to Sigma Xi member Venkatesh Narayanamurti for his contributions to technology research, policy, and national and international cooperation. Narayanamurti is the Benjamin Peirce Research Professor of Technology and Public Policy at Harvard University.
