Your support for science education is clear! This Giving Tuesday, 142 generous donors raised $14,441 to make it possible for Sigma Xi to send free subscriptions of American Scientist magazine to high schools. Thanks to your support, Sigma Xi is seeking nominations of 40 more schools in states were laws or proposals threaten the integrity of science education. The qualifying states are Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

The nomination form is open for the inaugural cohort of Sigma Xi Fellows. Full members with uninterrupted active membership for the last ten years and life members are eligible for the distinction. The Fellows distinction will honor members who have made exceptional contributions to the scientific enterprise in a variety of ways, such as research and development, mentorship, or service to Sigma Xi. Nominations are due by February 1, 2020.

The National Institutes of Health recently released a draft of their updated data sharing policy, which would apply to any NIH grantee no matter the size of the grant. Under the new policy, grantees would need to submit a detailed Data Management and Sharing plan prior to conducting research. Members of the public may submit comments to NIH about this draft policy through January 10.

A whistleblower at Google has raised concerns regarding HIPAA violations surrounding Project Nightingale, a healthcare information partnership involving Google. Ascension has partnered with Google to store patient data and analyze the information using artificial intelligence tools. Google has made similar deals in the past but those deals involved encrypted or anonymized data. In response, the Department of Health and Human Services has opened an investigation on the matter.

New time-lapse videos of Earth's glaciers and ice sheets as seen from space—some spanning nearly 50 years—are providing scientists with new insights into how the planet's frozen regions are changing. At the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco, scientists released new time series of images of Alaska, Greenland, and Antarctica using data from satellites including the NASA-U.S. Geological Survey Landsat missions.
