Mobile, enterprise apps, and corporate mobility policies to top the CIO agenda in 2014
cellular-news
Enterprise mobility will continue to be one of the hottest topics in IT, and high on the list of priorities for all CIOs, according to Ovum's Enterprise Mobility 2014 Trends-to-Watch report.
Consumerization (i.e. the impact of technology designed first and foremost for consumers) has driven the enterprise mobility market over the last few years, and Ovum has identified the three major trends in mobile consumerization that will have the biggest impact on businesses in 2014.

CIO
A new survey of 300 CIOs found that while the majority of IT executives see real value in mobilizing existing enterprise apps or rolling out brand new mobile innovations, they also see the costs and complexity of these initiatives as real challenges.

IT involvement a key factor in social analytics success
SearchCIO
Businesses understand the urgency of communicating with customers in language that resonates. As part one of this SearchCIO Trailblazer profile showed, the rise of Twitter as a powerful communications channel means that businesses increasingly have to learn to talk tweet to keep up with customers. Analyzing tweets for potential business value is no easy task, however, requiring both qualitative and quantitative expertise. One of the biggest social analytics challenges businesses will face is staying on top of language changes to ensure that they don't miss part of the conversation.

Information Age
Ben Grinnell, global CIO services leader at management consultancy North Highland, predicts what will disrupt the status quo in IT departments next year — and make (or break) CIOs.
Interior shifts CIO, IT consolidation initiatives into a new gear
Federal News Radio
The Interior Department dismantled the traditional set up of chief information officers nearly three years ago now.
Former Secretary Ken Salazar mandated there would only be one CIO in the entire department in December 2010. That model now is the basis for a key provision in the Federal IT Acquisition Reform Act. The Senate was expected to take up FITARA as part of the Defense Authorization bill recently. The bill is stuck in limbo several nonrelated controversial issues.
How (and why) to get started with SDNs
CIO
The rise of software-defined networks is one of the big tech stories of 2013. For many IT organizations looking at deploying the technology, it's no longer a question of "if," but "when," according to Gartner's Joe Skorupa, research vice president for Data Center Convergence and Andrew Lerner, research director for Networking, at Gartner. While virtualization and the cloud have increased data center agility, network provisioning remains a roadblock, says Skorupa.
CIOs opting for IT contractors over hiring full-time staff
CIO
The latest Bureau of Labor Statistics data reveals that over the last 12 months, only 77,600 IT jobs were added, as CIOs and hiring managers remain cautious about the slow economic recovery, says Victor Janulaitis, CEO of Janco Associates, a management consulting firm that specializes in IT.
According to the BLS data, September's IT jobs number was adjusted down from a gain of 2,500 jobs to a loss of 3,600 jobs.

Government Health IT
In the wake of Healthcare.Gov's difficult launch, some analysts — and even Congressional leaders — have asserted that the private sector could have done better, but that's not necessarily true, says Karen Evans, the former Administrator for Electronic Government and Information Technology at the Office of Management and Budget.
Nor was it problems with complexity, procurement and testing that led to the less than perfect launch of Healthcare.Gov, Evan said. The bottom line was: It was a management failure caused by policy officials. "They did this to themselves," she said.
Articulate leadership no guarantee for effective organizational communication
By Mike Wokasch
As a society, we admire, applaud and follow articulate people who help us understand, who inspire us and who project a future of possibilities that sound better than what we have today. This skill is essential for helping a group or organization identify "what could be" while aligning people and their beliefs to work toward a common goal. Articulate leaders can also verbally resolve differences, dispel untruths and keep the naysayer at bay. So why do they sometimes struggle to get anything done?
