Time is running out to submit projects to the DOE Housing Innovation Awards competition
Applications are due Sunday, May 31 for the U.S. Department of Energy's annual Housing Innovation Awards competition. The program recognizes the nation's leading builders of extremely energy-efficient, zero energy ready homes.

SIPA encourages its members to take advantage of this unique opportunity to gain national exposure through the DOE website and public relations activities. Winners will receive a full case study on the DOE website and a profile of their home on the DOE Tour of Zero, a virtual home tour of energy-efficient homes.

Representatives from the DOE will announce the winning projects on October 6, 2015 during the EEBA Excellence in Building Conference & Expo in Denver.

R-Control and Premier SIPs top Green Builder Magazine's reader survey for greenest structural system
In the January issue of Green Builder Magazine, the editors reveal their readers top picks for green products in their 2014 reader survey. Readers selected structural insulated panels (SIPs) from SIPA members R-Control and Premier SIPs by Insulfoam as two of the greenest structural systems available.

The survey also notes that green building professionals tend to show loyalty to a particular structural system and stick with it, whether that be SIPs, insulated concrete forms or engineered wood products.

New Project Highlights showcase SIPA Building Excellence Award winners
SIPA recently published two new Project Highlights detailing winners of the 2015 SIPA Building Excellence Awards. As the winner of the Multifamily category, the Park Row Apartments in St. Peter, Minnesota, demonstrate how SIPs can be incorporated in energy-efficient, low income housing. SIPA member manufacturer Energy Panel Structures was able to reduce construction time, make up for winter construction delays on the project and lower utility bills for the building's tenants.

The Plattner Farms shop in Grand Pass, Missouri, claimed the Agricultural category in this year's competition. Eight-inch-thick SIP walls provided by Energy Panel Structures reduced heating cost for this 9,600 sq. ft. agricultural shop and office space.

Insulspan SIP kit homes featured in Green Builder Magazine
Green building consultant Ricky Cappe came up with a great idea when designing his own custom, sustainable home: the cost could be significantly lowered by cutting out the architectural fees and research that goes into creating a green home. He transformed this idea into the Sustainable Affordable Kit (SAK) House—a complete set of building plans, material lists, suppliers, project schedules, and everything needed to construct a stylish and sustainable home.

Cappe's plans use SIPs from SIPA member Insulspan as the primary structural system to improve energy efficiency and ease of installation. The SAK House was featured in the November 2014 issue of Green Builder Magazine and the Insulspan website.

How well do you know green building certifications
Buildings — be they hotels, hospitals, IT parks, offices or residential spaces — are usually termed as energy guzzlers. From lighting up the structure to operating elevators, every single operational activity in a building requires energy. As a result, the impact of buildings on the environment can no longer be ignored. In fact, an International Energy Agency report shows that buildings are the largest energy consuming sector in the world. They account for over one-third of total final energy consumption and are an equally important source of carbon dioxide emissions.
